Does a engaement ring have to have a diamond?

Ok so a diamond is really really expensive. My gf is worth it but I don't have the money for a diamond. So I was thinking of instead of giving her something that is cubic ziricinia I might get her a ring with mystic fire topaz. Tell me if it's a bad idea or a good idea.
